What is DNS?

If you are a beginner to websites, you’re probably scared of acronyms like DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name Server and there’s no need to be scared of it. You only need to set your Domain Name Servers once when you create a website and then you never have to worry about it again unless you make changes to your website hosting.

We should all be happy domain name servers exist because if they didn’t, we would all have to remember long IP addresses like 51.21.124.32 to go to our favorite websites.

51.21.124.32 is the IP address of the hosting server for WebEminence.com.

Thanks to DNS, instead of typing in 9 numbers in your browser, you can type in a domain name like WebEminence.com that is much easier to remember. Your internet service provider will direct your request to a domain name server that translates the domain name into an IP address. The IP address will direct you to the correct location so the correct website is returned and displayed in your browser.

Sounds simple right? Not really.. it is a complex process that happens in milliseconds behind the scene. If you are a new website owner, you only need to worry about setting your DNS once so that visitors will find your website when they type your domain name into your browser.

How Do I Set Domain Name Servers for my domain?

Your domain name servers are set in your domain name register account. Wherever you purchased your domain name from is where you go to set your domain name servers.

Domain name servers connect your domain name to your hosting server so there are instances where website owners purchase a domain name and hosting from the same company, like HostGator for example. In that case, the name servers may automatically be set for you.

More often, website owners purchase domain names and hosting from two different companies and so you have to login to your domain registrar to set the domain name servers. Your hosting company should have given you the appropriate name servers to use for your hosting account. If you did not receive them from your hosting account, you should contact your hosting company or search the support section of their website.

For example, if have have hosting through Hostgator, your name servers might look something like this:

ns1.hostgator.com
ns2.hostgator.com

These name servers should be entered into the settings for your domain name within your domain registrar account. Read this blog post for instructions on entering your domain name servers in your Godaddy account. Many other domain registrars will work much the same way if you do not use Godaddy for your domains.

What Happens After I Set Domain Name Servers? Why Does it Take 24-48 hrs?

Once domain name servers are set for your domain, the change does not take effect immediately. This is because the domain name system is hosted my many domain name servers all over the world. Depending on your location and internet service provider, you may be accessing any of a number of domain name servers. So an internet surfer in Arizona may be accessing the updated domain name information while someone in Maryland is not.

I have found that within 3-4 hours, most domain name changes propagate throughout the entire US and after 24 hours the change should be in effect throughout the entire world.

If you’re new to WordPress or just new to blogging with WordPress, I created this walk through of how to post your WordPress blog. Hopefully you find it helpful. If do find it helpful, please share it with the buttons above. And let me know what questions you have by commenting below

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvYhyFg8owA

I’ll detail the basic steps below in writing for those of you who can’t watch the video for whatever reason. But make sure to watch the video later for more detailed information. Here’s the link to Elegant Themes mentioned in the video.

Step 1 – Add New Post

After logging in to WordPress, click Add New under the Posts menu

Step 2 – Add Title and Text Content

Type in title and blog content in the text editor in the areas in indicated by the arrows below. There are a few ways to add content to a WordPress blog. You can type content right into the text editor or you can copy and paste information from a Microsoft Word file or other word processing program.

If you’re copying content from Word, you may want to use the buttons Paste from Word or Paste as Plain Text in the WordPress editor to make sure the formatting does not get messed up. Sometimes if pasting from Microsoft Word, WordPress will add a lot of extra formatting code that can potentially mess up the formatting of the page. Using these buttons to paste in the text should keep this from happening. I usually paste in text as plain text using the Paste as Plain Text Button and then add formatting in WordPress.

Step 3 – Add Pictures and Other Content

I like to add all my text onto the post before adding pictures, video, and other multimedia content. This way you know where pictures should go in relation to text and you won’t have to go back a second time to make changes to layout and alignment.

Add pictures using the Add Media button. For more information on this, you can read my post on adding pictures to a WordPress post or page.
For adding Youtube embed code and any other HTML code to your WordPress post, you may need to click on the Text tab to view the HTML code of the post. Then paste in the HTML code into the text area where ever you want it.

Step 4 – Set Featured Image

Many WordPress themes use featured images to display in the post itself or in other post lists. It’s really easy to add a featured image quickly and it can add a great visual look to your posts where ever they are featured throughout your site. See my blog index page below for an example of how featured images are used on my WordPress theme. How featured images are used depends on the WordPress theme you are using.

Step 5 – Set Categories and Tags

Categories and tags are used to organized your blogs and allow visitors to find what they are looking for (and find things they were NOT looking for )

The way categories and tags are used within your site will depend on your WordPress theme.

Think of a categories list as a Table of Contents or topics list of your blog. And then think of Tags as an index of subjects mentioned within your blog. For example, if you have a blog on cooking, you may have posts in different categories like “Vegetarian, Low-fat, Desserts, etc…” but you may use tags for ingredients used in each post so visitors can click on a tag like “ground beef” to see all blog posts that mention “ground beef”. Make sense?

You aren’t required to use Categories and Tags but I would suggest at least using categories if your blog warrants it.

Read this page on the WordPress support site for more info on the difference between categories and tags.

Step 6 – Preview and Publish

Click Preview to see your post live and make any final touches. Your post will usually look different when viewed live in a browser than it looks in the WordPress text editor so it’s important to preview it before publishing.

After you are content with the way your post looks, set the publish date to “immediately” or some date in the future when you want your post to go live. Then click the Publish button and you’re done.

Even most beginners to website creation know that securing a domain name is the first step to getting a website up and running.

However, small business owners looking to launch their website will often prematurely buy a domain name without knowing what the next steps are AFTER buying a domain name.

As a result, these small business owners often get roped into buying expensive and unnecessary extras like private domain registration, email accounts, and hosting that are added on to their domain name purchase.

Just Say NO

It’s difficult to say NO to the clever marketing strategies presented by domain name registrars especially if it’s your first time purchasing a domain name. If you’ve ever registered a domain name, you know the marketing tricks some domain registrar companies are using to prey on unsuspecting customers. Some domain name registrars are infamous for their aggressive upsell strategies presented at the time of checkout.

During the checkout process, domain name registrars might say things like…

“Your domain name isn’t active unless you purchase hosting today!”

“Protect your information with private domain name registration!”

“Get 10 email addresses setup on your domain name!”

Some of these add-on products and services are valuable and necessary for certain customers.

However, most of the time, these services are not needed at all or will be included with affordable hosting services that will likely be purchased by the customer at a later date. Regardless, it’s usually not smart to get these services together with your domain name purchase until AFTER you know where you will buy website hosting from.

I can’t tell you how many of my clients start out asking about my services and tell me they purchased their domain name already and they’d like help in setting up their website.

That’s music to my ears…

until I find out that they spent a ton of money on 5 years of hosting, 10 email addresses, and private domain registration not even understanding what they were getting.

Lock Up Your Domain Name

Don’t get me wrong – There are good reasons NOT to delay in purchasing a domain name.

Many people are worried that the domain name they want is going to be snatched up. That’s a legitimate concern and it is certainly wise to lock up your domain name of choice to secure it for your use.

If you need to lock up your domain name, head over to GoDaddy now and do it. Just don’t buy any extras!

However, I always recommend that people purchase their domain name only and not add on any other services. Delaying other decisions allows you to remain flexible in how you design your website and what other services you choose to use for your website.

It’s important to know how you plan to build your website before you buy hosting, email addresses and other services. Here are a few examples of reasons why you should NOT buy extra services with your hosting:

The hosting account that you choose to purchase will likely include email addresses

If you want to build your site in using a popular content management system like WordPress, you’ll want to be sure to choose a hosting provider that makes it easy to install and maintain your platform of choice.

If you’re hiring a website designer, you may want to take their advice on website hosting and other features..

So if you’re a small business owner and you want to lock up your domain name, go for it! But don’t get sucked into buying all the add-ons. Just secure your domain name and then consult with a professional web designer or do your own research to determine what your best options are for all the other website services you need to complete your web presence..

I Bought Weebly PRO for Show & Tell

If you browse Weebly’s website, you will not see anything about a PRO version. They only promote their Free service on their website.

And that’s for good reason. Their free version is packed with features. It has everything you need to build a website fast and easy.

You probably won’t be able to find the Weebly PRO features and pricing until you become a free member. So let me solve the confusion for you and give you pricing and features included with Weebly PRO.

I paid for Weebly PRO on my example site so I could write a complete review of Weebly.

Weebly PRO Costs

The current pricing for Weebly is shown to the right. It’s a tremendous value for what you’re getting at such a low price.

#1 Reason To Get Weebly PRO

Even though the Weebly free version has everything you need, you may be sacrificing professionalism by using it.

This is because the footer of your site will say “Create a free site with Weebly.”

So you’re basically broadcasting that you have a free website.

You may think this makes you look smart and thrifty but some people may think this makes you and your business look cheap.

For less than $5/month, you can upgrade to PRO and customize your footer to display what you want. Plus you’ll get a bunch of other cool features with PRO that will give your site a more professional look.

Weeble PRO Features – More Reasons to Upgrade

If you are already a free member of Weebly, you can login and click upgrade to see the PRO features. Here are some of the important ones:

Remove Weebly Footer and customize your own footer. See mine on my example site.

Direct upload of HD videos. Free version built in video only allows YouTube videos

10 sites included with Weebly Pro vs 2 sites on a free account

Various levels of access for editors – great for companies who have multiple people managing the website

Password protect certain pages

Header Slideshows – adds a professional touch to your site. See my header slideshows.

Audio player

Site search

Lots more…

So – you’re trying to build a website and you heard about Weebly. I assume that’s why you landed on this page. Weebly is a site builder that allows beginners with no knowledge of HTML to create a professional website using a drag-and-drop online interface.

I know the questions you have.

Is it really easy to use?
Will I need to upgrade to the PRO version?
How long will it take to build my site on Weebly?

I Built a Site on Weebly to Share My Experience with You

I build sites for clients but many of my prospects wish to build sites on their own. To help them avoid some costly mistakes, I test some of the popular website builders myself.
Most reviews don’t comment on the home pages of the site or service being reviewed but it’s one of the first things I look at when reviewing a service. I can tell a lot about a service by their own website.

If their website is crappy, there’s a good chance that their service and website designs will be crappy too.

In this case, Weebly.com is a clean and simple site that gives a concise overview of all the features you get as a Weebly member.

You can check it out and read more about Weebly’s service and all its features. I’ll give you my take on their sales pitch and also go over some of the features briefly.

Price

Price is one of the most important factors for many people and you’ll probably like Weebly’s price of $0 (FREE!). Weebly does offer a PRO version but unlike most services, the free version is more than enough for most website owners.

However, if you plan to use Weebly to build your site, I recommend purchasing the PRO version since it’s very affordable at under $10/month and offers a few great upgrades. You can read my separate post on Weebly PRO vs Weebly free version.

Domain Name

When you build your site with Weebly, by default your website will be live on a Weebly subdomain. For example, my site is on the subdomain webeminence.weebly.com.

You do have the option of purchasing your own domain name and using it for your website so your URL is not a weebly subdomain. If you can afford $10/year for a domain name, I would recommend doing this since it makes your website look more professional.

Weebly will sell you a domain but their prices are a little high so you are better off buying the domain from a domain registrar like GoDaddy.

After purchasing the domain, you can go into Site Settings and follow the directions to set your Weebly site to a domain you already own.

Click Change Site Address and then select the option Use a Domain You Already Own and follow instructions. (See pictures to right)

The GoDaddy link above is my affiliate link. If you purchase a domain name through that link, I’ll get a small commission. As a Thank You, I’ll help you link your new domain to your Weebly site. Just ask if you need help.

Weebly Design Themes

One typical downside to using a website builder is the design themes or templates are usually not very impressive. It’s another case of “you get what you pay for.”

If you have a budget of $2,000+, you can look into purchasing a professional custom design, but I’m guessing if you are researching Weebly, you don’t have that type of budget.

Overall, the Weebly design themes are very good. In comparison to other website builders that are free, they are some of the best design themes available from any service. And they are better designs than what many paid services offer! You can look at my Weebly Example Site to get an idea of what a Weebly theme looks like.

There are over 200 themes to choose from at the time of writing this and they are always adding more. Some of the older design themes look more like templates but if you select some of the newer themes, you might even trick some of your friends into thinking you spent $2500 on a custom website because they look REALLY GOOD!

There’s a lot of customization available no matter which theme you choose. You can see examples of this in my video walkthrough below.

Website Builder

The website builder interface is one of the most important aspects of a website service because it’s HOW you will build your website. It has to be simple and intuitive so that anyone can use it. This is where Weebly shines.

All website builders claim to be user friendly but many of them are buggy or just a pain to use. Weebly works so well that is is actually fun to use.

At least it was for me.

I put this video together to give you a close look at the interface Weebly offers and display some of the other features of Weebly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_nt4K1mTaY

One of the great aspects of the Weebly website builder is it makes it almost impossible even for beginners to screw something up. I’ve seen sites built on other platforms with text overlapping, pictures misaligned, and all types of design issues.

With Weebly’s drag and drop interface, you can add 10 elements to the page in 5 seconds, and they will look perfect with correct spacing and attractive alignments. One of the reasons people don’t experiment with websites is they are afraid they are going to break something. You don’t have to worry with Weebly – you can’t break anything!

When I put together my example site, I was able to complete it within a matter of days and I probably spent about 8 hours total. This included typing all the content and creating extra pictures. Very little time was spent actually creating the website.

Everything I needed was easy to find. All the elements were dragged from the top menu and then customized easily after they were in place.

The Basic elements of the Weebly site buidler are shown in the image below. You simply drag these to your website layout to piece together each page of your website. The Design and Pages tab are then used to customize the look and navigation of your website.

Cool Features

Weebly has a solid foundation with its website builders and professional design themes. They add to this foundation some very cool features that really make the service stand out among the competition. Their website does a great job of explaining these features but here are a few that should be mentioned here:

Mobile optimized – Your website will be reformatted automatically for visitors browsing on smart phones and tablets

Smartphone app to login through your phone and make changes to your website on the go (Currently iPhone only but coming to Android soon)

Built-in multimedia – Easily add Youtube videos and picture slideshows. Plus, use Weebly’s built-in ImagePerfect to crop, resize, and add effects to images. Huge timesaver!

More advanced users have full access to HTML and CSS for more customization options

You probably don’t like talking about or even thinking about your credit card processing fees but if you take credit cards in your website, then you better think about them. You don’t have to be an expert in credit card processing but you need to know enough to make sure you’re not throwing away money on ridiculously high fees.

Are You Getting Screwed by High Credit Card Processing Fees?

A good way to make sure you’re getting a good deal is to compare costs with other customers buying the same thing.

So let’s compare fees…

I recently switched credit card processors and am paying a lot less. I didn’t even think I was paying too much but was surprised when I got a quote from a competing company and they were much cheaper than my current card processor.

Before I share the details, let me tell you a little bit about what I learned about credit card fees in the process of switching.

How Credit Card Processing Fees Work & What I WAS Paying

There are different types of fees that you need to understand when it comes to credit card processing. I’ll list them here and explain what I was paying with my previous setup.

Gateway Monthly Fee – The gateway company initiates your transaction on your website and ensures information is transmitted securely. My gateway company was Authorize.net. I was paying them a flat fee of $24.85/month

Processor Monthly Fee – The processor is the actual company processing your credit card transaction and transferring money to your bank account. Authorize.net links up with many credit card processor but my account was with PowerPay. They were charging me a flat fee of $30.90/month. This included a PCI Compliance fee of $10.00, service fee of $9.95, and regulatory/license fees of $10.95.

American Express Merchant Fee – American Express operates as a separate credit card processor. Their monthly fee was a flat $19.00 for me. For simplicity, we’ll leave that out of this discussion.

Discount Fee – These are the big daddy of credit card processing fees. The discount rate is the percentage of each transaction that is deducted before the deposit is made in your bank account. With Authorize.net/Powerpay, I was paying rates of 2.21% to 3.31% depending on the type of credit card. Many credit card processors use these variable tiered rates for different types of cards (rewards cards, business cards, etc.) because their costs are different for different types of cards.

Some people view this as a sneaky way of charging extra by putting more charges in the category of the higher rate. The majority of my transactions are at the lower rate so I’d like to think that it is the processors way of making sure they are charging the lowest rate possible. It probably just depends on what processor you choose but the goal should be to get the tiered rates as low as possible.

If you are getting charged tiered rates, it would be wise to check your statements to see what percentage of your transactions area getting charged at the higher or lower rate. For a more detailed look at tiered rates and ALL the details of credit card processing fees, here’s a really informative post at CardFellow.com:

Other Fees – The other fees in my PowerPay statements included assessment fees, batch fees, and access fees. These were usually only about 0.6% but that’s a large percentage considering I didn’t account for these fees and instead focused on the discount rate. These fees are typically charged by any credit card processor and they claim they are just passing along their own costs from the credit card companies.

My Total Cost – $55.75 per month + 3.3%

When someone asks “What are your credit card fees?”, the answer is usually a monthly payment and a percentage. In my case, if you add up all the costs above, I was paying $55.80 a month and about 3.3% in total fees. That’s pretty high by industry standards. My monthly volume was below $2,000 at the time so this amounted to a total cost of around 7%. That’s a pretty big slice of the revenue pie.

My New Deal – $11.95 per month + 2.5%

I recently got a business checking account from my bank and they hooked me up with their credit card processor Moneris.

I figured I would at least see what their costs are since I knew my costs were high. As it turns out, their fees are much lower. They do charge tiered rates but they range from 1.99% to 2.99% compared to the 2.21-3.31% that I was paying.

They also do not have a batch fee and some of the regulatory fees I was paying with Authorize.net/Powerpay.

Another huge savings is that their total monthly fee is only $11.95 compared to the $55.80 I was paying. That’s a pretty big cost savings, especially for customers processing less than $5,000 per month. One of the reasons the monthly fees are lower is I’m not paying two companies anymore. Moneris processes payments through their own processor, eSELECT Plus, and that is included in the monthly fee.

Am I Happy Now?

I’m happy to be saving money but am I getting the best deal now? The truth is…I’m not sure. That’s part of my reason for writing this post. I’m curious to hear feedback from you on what you pay for credit card processing fees. Maybe I’ll find an option to save even more money in the future. Or maybe I’ve helped you realize that you are paying way too much in credit card fees with your current processor.

Comment below and tell me how much you are paying in monthly fees and % rate?

What does the front door of your house look like?

When I was looking at houses to purchase with a professional realtor a few years ago, the realtor was always looking at the front door to see how nice it was. She said, “The front door can tell you a lot about the entire house.” We actually walked away from one house because there were spider webs on the front door and the paint was peeling.

Are there spider webs and peeled paint on the home page of your website?

Your home page is usually the first impression visitors get of your website and your business. If they don’t like the front door, they’ll be out the back door in a flash. Translation: they will hit the back button on their browser.

So what are the keys to making the home page of your website appeal to the visitors and make them want to come inside? Here are a few important points to consider in designing your home page.

1. Home Page Stuffing

One of the most common problems I see in home page design is something I call “Home Page Stuffing.” Sorry if I’m making you crave Thanksgiving dinner but I’m not talking about that kind of stuffing. I’m talking about putting EVERYTHING on your home page because you’re worried that if you don’t, people won’t see it.

This would be like putting your living room furniture on your front porch. Don’t worry – people will come inside.

The home page should include a few basic things:

an explanation of what your website is about and what you do – usually a sentence or two will do

easy navigation (see below)

a few highlighted links to pages within your site

if a personal contact like a phone call is one of the major goals of your website, contact information could be included on the home page

Anything beyond the items above is probably home page stuffing and will overwhelm your visitors. Don’t forget, your visitors have a mouse with a button. They are on the internet and planning on clicking links. As long as you follow some of the principles below, you don’t need to worry about your visitors finding what they are looking for on your site.

Bad Home Page Design
(from WebPagesThatSuck.com)

2. Simple Navigation

Your navigation should be easy to find, simple to read, and clear in its description. Most of your website visitors will look for navigation at the top or left side of the website so that’s the best place to put it.

Tiered navigation is your friend. And by that I mean using sub-menus. I’ve seen website owners put 15 links on their main navigation. A better choice would be to use drop down menus. People love drop down menus because it adds an ounce of interactivity to your site. It also creates an organized look and reduces clutter. Help people find what they are looking for by using sub-menus if you have more than 5-6 links.

To find out where your visitors are clicking and how well your navigation is working, you might want to look into installing click tracking for a period of time using a service like CrazyEgg.com

See more good home page designs

Good Home Page Design

3. Appealing Design

We walked away from the house with my realtor because the front door was unappealing. It’s not just that it was a sign of what the inside of the house looked like, we actually didn’t feel comfortable staring at the ugliness of it. Don’t put your website visitors in that position.

Ugly designs are one of the biggest problems with website design. It’s easily correctable with pre-designed website themes that are sleek and elegant. There’s no reason to have an ugly website. If you don’t have an eye for design, find someone who does.

The home page design should have some catchy graphics or even a video. If your visitors land on a home page with a bunch of text, they will get bored and leave fast. Include some movement and graphical elements to keep their attention and keep them around longer than the average 2.0 seconds that website visitors typically stay.

Your home page design is vitally important. It can make or break the success of your website. Follow these principles of home page design and you should have more visitors entering through your front door.

From AWStats Glossary…

You can find full information on AWStats at the official website. On that site, there is a user guide with a glossary of terms. Here are few of the important terms to know when reading your traffic statistics

Unique Visitor: A unique visitor is a person or computer (host) that has made at least 1 hit on 1 page of your web site during the current period shown by the report. If this user makes several visits during this period, it is counted only once. Visitors are tracked by IP address, so if multiple users are accessing your site from the same IP (such as a home or office network), they will be counted as a single unique visitor. The period shown by AWStats reports is by default the current month. However if you use AWStats as a CGI you can click on the “year” link to have a report for all the year. In such a report, period is a full year, so Unique Visitors are number of hosts that have made at least 1 hit on 1 page of your web site during the year.

Visits: Number of visits made by all visitors. Think “session” here, say a unique IP accesses a page, and then requests three other pages within an hour. All of the ”pages” are included in the visit, therefore you should expect multiple pages per visit and multiple visits per unique visitor (assuming that some of the unique IPs are logged with more than an hour between requests)

Pages: The number of “pages” viewed by visitors. Pages are usually HTML, PHP or ASP files, not images or other files requested as a result of loading a “Page” (like js,css… files). Files listed in the NotPageList config parameter (and match an entry of OnlyFiles config parameter if used) are not counted as “Pages”.

Once you start checking traffic statistics with AWStats, it’s hard to stop. There’s no 800 number for this addiction so you’ll have to monitor it yourself. I find myself checking statistics multiple times per day sometimes and have to remind myself that it’s often a waste of time. It’s fun to see the numbers especially when they are increasing but I have to remind myself that I am better off promoting my site for 15 minutes than reading my AWStats report for 15 minutes. I would say checking traffic statistics once per day is reasonable but if you can get down to checking it only once per week and spend more time on promotion, you’re going to like the results in your traffic report.

I created the video below to help WordPress beginners learn how to add pictures to a WordPress page or post. If you have any questions about adding pictures to WordPress pages after watching, feel free to comment below and I’ll respond.

Further Explanation…

To help explain some of the concepts in the video, I added some example pictures below to show how alignment, title tags, and image links work.

This Image is aligned left and has a title tag “Add Pictures”

Because the title tag is “Add Pictures” when you hover over the image with your cursor, you will see a tooltip pop up with the text. The image is aligned to the left so this text is wrapping around the image to the right. You can see in the image options below that left alignment was selected and “Add Pictures” was entered for the title tag.

This Image is aligned right and has a Custom URL link.

Because I entered a URL link to the Youtube video in the Link URL field, the image to the right will open the link when clicked. I selected the option to ‘open in a new window’ so a new browser window will open when the image is clicked. Try clicking on the image. In the image options below, you can see the Youtube URL entered and Right alignment is selected.

If you have any questions after watching the video, please let me know so I can add more information to this page.

Did someone tell you to try Pay Per Click advertising for your small business but you have no idea what Pay Per Click is?? Well then, this post is for you. Let me explain what it is as simply as I can.

To explain, look at the picture of Google’s search engine results below. The listings NOT highlighted in blue are the organic search results. These are the search results that Google determines are the top listings for a given keyword search. Google uses sophisticated algorithms to determine the organic rankings. There are thousands of blog posts and books written on the topic of ranking high in the organic listings but for now, we are focusing on the ad listings highlighted in blue. These are the Pay Per Click ad listings.

Google uses a program called Adwords to allow advertisers to place their ads in these areas. Sponsored ads appear above and to the right of the organic listings as shown. After joining Adwords, you can create campaigns and bid on keywords so that when they are searched in Google, your ad will show up.

Here’s Google’s Intro to Adwords

How Pay Per Click (PPC) Works – The Basics

Let’s take an example – If you are selling red shoes on your website, you might bid for keywords like the following:

buy red shoes
red shoes discount
red shoes

There are methods to make sure your ad shows up for all the keywords using keyword match types, but that is getting beyond the basics so we’ll save it for later.

A bid for a keyword requires an advertiser to set the maximum dollar amount they are willing to bid for each keyword. Average bids in Google Adwords typically range from $0.30 to $2.00. In this case, you might decide to bid $0.50 for the “red shoe” keywords listed below. Google uses your bid amount along with a measure of your site’s quality (called Quality Score) to determine your Ad Rank. The advertiser with the #1 ad rank will be listed first followed by #2 and so on.

There many tools, strategies, and intricacies within Google Adwords that I won’t mention here since the goal of this post is only to introduce you to what Pay Per Click advertising is and how it works.

You can probably see the opportunity provided by Pay Per Click advertising through Google Adwords. You’ve been wanting to get to the top of Google at any cost. Pay Per Click is probably the fastest and easiest way to get targeted traffic to your website from Google.
