WordPress Multipurpose Themes – Don’t Overlook Them

May 30, 2018 | WordPress | 0 comments

When searching for WordPress themes for your new site, it makes sense to look for a design created with your particular industry in mind. After all, there’s a big difference between promoting a pediatric dentistry practice and promoting a tattoo and body piercing parlor.

While it’s not a bad idea to explore industry-specific designs, you should be aware that many WordPress theme developers are moving away from these targeted templates and more towards multipurpose themes. You might also be surprised with how versatile these multipurpose WordPress themes can be.

Multipurpose Themes for WordPress

If you search a site like ThemeForest, you’ll find categories of industry-specific WordPress themes

What is a Multipurpose WordPress Theme?

In concept, a multipurpose theme is created as a template suitable for any type of brand, business, or service. These themes come equipped with all the basic content features for building a website like text, images, galleries, and forms. Many of them also incorporate advanced features like background video, pricing charts,  e-commerce, and social media integration, and more. These basic and advanced features are usually integrated in a way that gives you the flexibility of stylistic design to best suit the nature of your business.

These themes are more of a blank canvas for creating just about any style while still guiding you with intuitive layouts, features, and tools. So, while sites built with the same multipurpose theme may be somewhat similar, they can still be unique in their own right.

How to Choose a Multipurpose Theme

There are quite a few multipurpose themes to choose from, and it’s important to find the one that works best for you. Most developers feature demos of their multi-purpose themes which will give you an idea of how one theme can be reworked and reused for a variety of different purposes.

Look at examples to see if you’re going to be able to build the exact site that you want. Also, make sure the theme you choose includes all the features you’ll need as many have multiple built-in color skins, the ability to import the exact demo you liked, and integrated plug-ins like RevSlider to create awesome sliders or VisualComposer to make building pages a cinch.

There’s no reason to feel overwhelmed given so many options, and to help, I have a video on WordPress Frameworks designed to guide you through some of  the main aspects of what to look for in WordPress frameworks which are the foundation for these multi-purpose themes.

What Multipurpose Theme Should I Use?

With so may options, it all comes down to personal preference. I’ve personally built 200+ websites with a single theme from Elegant Themes called Divi – which should be an example of just how versatile one of these multipurpose themes can be!

I’ve dedicated an entire video to discussing why I love Divi. Watch 8 Things I LOVE about Divi and see if I can convince you.

Here are a few other popular multi-purpose themes:

Ultimately, there could be reasons to go with a theme built specifically for your business, but don’t count out the versatility of multipurpose themes. With so much development heading in that direction, you don’t want to get left behind and discover that you’ve missed an overall better solution for your web needs.
